First Amendment Project needs your help. Without your support now we will not be able to continue to offer legal services to activists, journalists or artists we have assisted over the past 12 years. We are in serious danger of closing if we cannot raise funds from people who care about freedom of speech and of the press. Please help us keep our doors open.

Cops and Content and the Men That Kill Them

'25 to Life' makes 'Grand Theft Auto' look like 'Romper Room'

Senator Charles Schumer, demanding that Microsoft and Sony terminate their licensing agreement with Eidos, the game maker behind the new "cop killer" game, "25 to Life," which Schumer called "an all time low". While it’s refreshing to see a politician focus on content other than sex for a change, Schumer’s attempts to pressure Microsoft and Sony into terminating their licensing agreements is an abuse of his power.

Abraham reportedly was about to slice Isaac’s throat before the same voice in his head that told him to do it urged him to stop. Has exposure of the Old Testament to children resulted in a spike in throat slitting?

Immediately following a session of Grand Theft Auto on a large screen TV, I can say that I found myself screeching out the driveway a little too fast, but it took all of 1 second for me to realize that I was back in reality on a real street. And of course, road rage existed long before video games.

People inclined to kill cops are probably going to behave as such regardless of whether the behavior is reinforced by a video game, just as the same game might further the resolve of someone with a propensity to become a police officer.

Community Activism Alive and Well in San Diego!

Last month, the First Amendment Project (FAP) accepted representation of Katherine Lopez, a community activist in San Diego who had been sued for statements she put in an email in which she encouraged members of the community to testify at a governmental proceeding ( a community planning committee meeting). We immediately demanded that the plaintiff dismiss the suit citing the absolute statutory protections California law gives to such communications. Today, we received confirmation that the suit was dismissed. A really nice, and easy, victory.

Remember, your support helps us to win cases like these. Please donate generously.
